BMW's Longest 5 Series Yet Just Went Electric — And It Costs Nearly ₹80 Lakh

BMW India has quietly added another long-wheelbase electric model to its lineup, and this one comes with a genuinely long name to match its stretched proportions.

The BMW i5 LWB launched in India on Monday at ₹79.6 lakh (ex-showroom), arriving in a single trim: the eDrive35L M Sport. The "LWB" designation stands for long wheelbase — a configuration BMW has increasingly favored for the Indian market, where rear-seat legroom carries real weight in the luxury segment, often more than outright driving dynamics.

On range, the i5 LWB is positioned as a genuinely long-distance electric sedan, with BMW claiming up to 669 kilometers on a single charge — a figure that, if it holds up close to real-world conditions, would put it comfortably ahead of range anxiety concerns for most Indian buyers considering the switch from a traditional combustion luxury sedan.

The launch continues BMW's broader electrification push across its long-wheelbase lineup in India, following the i5 LWB's stablemate, the X1 LWB, and coming alongside the automaker's separately announced plans to bring the i7 in a similar extended-wheelbase electric configuration later this year.

For BMW, the calculation is fairly straightforward: India's luxury EV buyers increasingly expect both genuine range and rear-seat comfort in the same package, rather than treating electric power and long-wheelbase luxury as separate purchasing decisions. The i5 LWB is BMW's bet that it can deliver both at once — even if the near-₹80 lakh price tag keeps it firmly in a narrow, high-end slice of the market.
