A 20-Foot Crater Just Opened Up on One of Noida's Busiest Roads

Commuters on one of Noida's most heavily used routes got an unwelcome surprise Tuesday morning.

A section of the elevated road connecting Sector 61 and Sector 18 suddenly caved in, leaving behind a crater roughly 20 feet long and 10 feet deep. The affected stretch sits on a 4.8-kilometer elevated corridor that serves as a key link between Ghaziabad, Greater Noida West, several residential societies, and Delhi's DND area — meaning the disruption hit one of the region's genuinely high-traffic commuter routes right during morning rush hour.

Authorities halted traffic on the affected section as a safety precaution once the damage was spotted. Fortunately, no major accident or injury has been reported in connection with the collapse.

Preliminary assessments point to a familiar culprit behind Indian road cave-ins: soil erosion caused by leaking water and sewage pipes running beneath the road surface. Over time, that kind of underground leakage can quietly wash away supporting soil until the road above simply gives way — often without much visible warning beforehand.

Noida Authority officials confirmed an investigation into the incident is now underway, though no timeline for repairs or a root-cause determination has been announced yet. The disruption adds to a broader stretch of infrastructure concerns raised in the region this week, alongside separate reports of ongoing farmer protests over land acquisition in Gautam Buddh Nagar and water contamination complaints from residents of a nearby housing complex.

For now, commuters relying on the Sector 61–Sector 18 stretch should expect continued traffic disruption until repair work is completed and the road is deemed safe to reopen fully.
