San Francisco Lets Residents Pick Where the Next EV Charger Goes

If you drive electric in San Francisco but don't have a garage, the city just handed you a say in fixing that.

San Francisco officially launched a citywide curbside EV charging program this week, moving beyond its earlier pilot phase into a permanent, scalable system. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is now accepting applications from charging companies, while residents can use a new interactive tool, ChargeUp SF, to nominate specific streets and public locations where they'd like chargers installed.

The target audience is deliberate. "For San Franciscans without a garage or driveway, access to charging can determine whether going electric is even practical," said Tyrone Jue, director of the San Francisco Environment Department. In a dense city where apartments and condos vastly outnumber homes with private driveways, that access gap has been one of the more overlooked barriers to EV adoption.

The program builds directly on a pilot that launched back in April 2025, which tested a handful of curbside chargers — including the city's first two, installed outside a Duboce Triangle building — to gauge neighborhood demand, grid capacity, and practical installation logistics. Mayor Daniel Lurie's office says lessons from that trial run now inform a formal, two-phase permitting process: companies must first prove their technical qualifications and financial readiness before securing site-specific permits.

The city's target is modest but concrete: 100 curbside EV charging stations installed by 2030. That's a fraction of what a fully built-out network would eventually require, but San Francisco officials are framing it as a deliberate, resident-driven approach rather than a rushed rollout — a model other dense cities without abundant driveway access may end up watching closely.
