East Zone all but sealed the Duleep Trophy 2026 title on Day 4 of the final in Chennai, closing play with a commanding 584-run lead over South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium — a position so dominant that only an East Zone win or a draw remain realistic outcomes heading into the fifth and final day.
The foundation was laid earlier in the tournament by Ishan Kishan, whose monumental 270 in East Zone's first innings powered the side to a mammoth 708 all out. South Zone, in reply, were bowled out for 336, with captain Tilak Varma falling agonizingly short of a century, dismissed for 99 off 211 balls — a genuinely patient innings that still left his side 372 runs adrift of East Zone's total.
Rather than easing off with such a commanding first-innings lead already banked, East Zone came out swinging in their second innings. Kishan continued his extraordinary tournament form with a brisk 80 off 98 balls, striking nine fours and three sixes, while Shikhar Mohan added a composed 52 of his own. East Zone closed Day 4 at 212 for 5, with Kumar Kushagra (34 not out) and Md Kounain Quraishi (26 not out) unbeaten at stumps — extending the lead to a scarcely believable 584 runs.
South Zone's bowlers did manage to pick up wickets late in the day — Mohammed Siraj, MD Nidheesh, Shaik Rasheed, and Tripurana Vijay each claimed one apiece — but with a deficit this steep, the wickets amounted to little more than damage control.
East Zone's bowling attack deserves real credit for setting up this position in the first place. Earlier in the match, pace duo Mohammed Shami and Mukesh Kumar extracted reverse swing from an aging ball on a placid Chennai pitch, delivering the kind of relentless, skillful spell that reduced South Zone from a promising start to all out for 336.
With South Zone now needing something close to a miracle just to force a draw, East Zone head into Day 5 firmly in control — a fitting cap to a tournament that's already showcased breakout performances from Ishan Kishan and a resurgent East Zone bowling unit throughout the knockout stages.
