Your Daily Coffee Might Be Doing More Than Waking You Up

A University of Oulu study of over 2,200 adults found regular coffee drinkers had less body fat, more muscle, and distinct hormone patterns — even at the same BMI as non-drinkers.

Turns out that morning cup might be quietly reshaping your body composition, not just your alertness.

New research out of Finland's University of Oulu has linked regular coffee drinking to leaner bodies, more muscle, and a noticeably different hormone profile — findings that add fresh detail to a connection scientists have suspected for years but never fully explained. Coffee has long been tied to lower rates of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, yet exactly why has remained fuzzy.

Researchers pulled data from 2,264 people, all around 46 years old, who've been part of Finland's long-running Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 study. The team looked at how habitual coffee intake lined up with blood-based markers, cardiometabolic risk indicators, and sex hormone levels.

The body composition results stood out immediately. People who drank more coffee tended to carry less total body fat and less visceral fat — the kind that wraps around internal organs and is generally considered more harmful than fat stored elsewhere. They also had more skeletal muscle. What makes that particularly interesting is that this held true even among participants who had roughly the same BMI. In other words, two people could weigh and measure the same on paper, yet the heavier coffee drinker was likely to be carrying a healthier ratio of fat to muscle underneath.

There was a metabolic thread here too. Higher coffee intake tracked with lower blood levels of branched-chain amino acids in both men and women — compounds that, when chronically elevated, have been linked in prior research to insulin resistance and higher diabetes risk.

Hormones told a more complicated story, and one that split noticeably by sex. In men, more coffee correlated with a healthier glucose-insulin balance along with higher total and bioavailable testosterone, plus more sex hormone-binding globulin. Free testosterone, though, actually came in slightly lower — a nuance that hints coffee's hormonal effects aren't simply "more testosterone across the board." Among women, the pattern was narrower: mainly higher SHBG and lower measures of free androgens.

"Coffee is consumed by millions of people every day, yet we still know surprisingly little about how it relates to our metabolism and hormones," said Luca Verroest, the study's lead author and a doctoral researcher at Oulu. She noted that a distinct hormonal signature persisted even after accounting for BMI and general lifestyle factors — and that the pattern looked different in men than in women.

It's worth being careful about what this study can and can't tell us. Because it's observational, it shows an association, not proof that coffee itself is causing these biological shifts. Something else tied to coffee-drinking habits could theoretically be driving part of the pattern instead.

Finland's a fitting place for this kind of research, too — the country drinks more coffee per capita than almost anywhere else on Earth, with average annual consumption running around 11.8 kilograms, or roughly 26 pounds, per person.

Researchers say the next step is figuring out whether coffee itself is actually responsible for these changes, and if so, which specific compounds in the drink might be doing the work. That means animal studies for now, with human intervention trials likely further down the road. Until then, scientists are stopping well short of turning this into dietary advice — more research is needed before anyone starts prescribing extra espresso shots for body composition.
