Spider-Man: Brand New Day topped the domestic box office for a fourth consecutive weekend, pulling in $39 million despite facing down a genuinely crowded field of new releases — a horror sequel, a Jason Statham action thriller, a comedy, and a family film all opened against it. The film's domestic total now sits at $854.9 million, putting it on track to overtake Avengers: Endgame and claim the No. 2 spot on the all-time domestic chart, trailing only Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Globally, the picture is even more staggering. Brand New Day crossed $2.22 billion worldwide this weekend, officially passing The Force Awakens's $2.07 billion tally to become the sixth-highest-grossing film of all time — trailing only Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, Ne Zha 2, and Titanic.
Context helps explain just how unusual this run has been. The film set the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend ever back in July with $360 million, later becoming the fastest movie in history to cross both $400 million and $800 million domestically. Four weekends later, its weekend-over-weekend decline remains remarkably gentle for a blockbuster this deep into its theatrical run — a pattern normally reserved for films with unusually strong word-of-mouth staying power.
The domestic box office overall has had a genuinely historic August because of it. Per Rentrak data, this marked the 18th consecutive weekend with $100 million or more in overall box office receipts — the first time that's happened since summer 2023 — with Brand New Day doing much of the heavy lifting.
It wasn't the only story of the weekend, though. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, now in its fifth weekend, pulled in $23.2 million domestically — the eighth-best fifth weekend of any film in box office history — and crossed $500 million domestically in just a month, a feat only 16 films have ever achieved that quickly. The film has also become Nolan's highest-grossing movie ever, both domestically and internationally.
Newcomer Insidious: Out of the Further opened respectably at $25 million-plus domestically and over $60 million worldwide, while Jason Statham's action thriller Mutiny debuted to a solid $7.5 million over three days from Lionsgate — enough for a B+ CinemaScore and a start slightly ahead of Statham's earlier 2026 release, Shelter.
Taken together, the weekend generated roughly $134.2 million domestically — 71% higher than the same frame a year earlier — pushing the 2026 domestic box office total past $7 billion for the year, running 20% ahead of 2025's pace.
For an industry that's spent years fielding questions about theatrical moviegoing's long-term health, this particular August has offered a fairly emphatic answer.
