Alia Bhatt's Alpha Lands on Netflix Today — A Spy Thriller That Split Critics But Made Franchise History

Alpha, the Alia Bhatt and Sharvari-led spy thriller, begins streaming on Netflix India from August 28, roughly two months after wrapping its theatrical run. The timing isn't accidental — the digital release lands right over the Raksha Bandhan weekend, giving the film a second shot at audiences during a high-viewership stretch for Indian streaming platforms. Netflix confirmed the release Wednesday with a social post inviting fans to "join the Alpha gang."

The film carries genuine franchise significance beyond its own box office performance. Alpha marks the seventh installment in the Yash Raj Films Spy Universe — the sprawling franchise that began with Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger back in 2012 and has since expanded through Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, and Tiger 3 — and it's the first entry to put two women at the center of the story instead of a male lead.

Directed by Shiv Rawail, who previously helmed Netflix's well-received series The Railway Men, Alpha follows Alia Bhatt as Sita and Sharvari as Durga Kaul, two highly trained operatives whose mission pulls them into a dangerous chapter connected to their own pasts. The supporting cast reads like a genuine ensemble effort: Anil Kapoor as Colonel Vikrant Kaul, Bobby Deol as antagonist Fateh Singh Lakhawat, alongside R. Madhavan, Dia Mirza, and a cameo from Hrithik Roshan reprising his War character, Kabir Dhaliwal — a connective thread tying Alpha directly into the broader spy universe timeline.

The road to release wasn't entirely smooth. Alpha was originally slated for a December 2025 launch before facing repeated delays, eventually opening in cinemas on July 3 after pending VFX work pushed the date back twice.

Its theatrical performance, by franchise standards, was modest. Made on a reported budget of ₹100 crore, Alpha collected roughly ₹58.86 crore domestically and ₹29.05 crore overseas, for a worldwide total near ₹99.10 crore — enough to land as the eighth highest-grossing Bollywood release of 2026, but also the lowest-grossing entry in the Spy Universe franchise to date.

Critical reception mirrored the mixed commercial result. A Hindustan Times review described the film as neither the disaster some had predicted nor the major reinvention the franchise arguably needed, with several critics praising Alia Bhatt's action work specifically while expressing more divided views on the screenplay and the story's emotional depth.

For YRF, though, the digital release matters beyond box office math. Alpha represents a genuine bet on female-led action storytelling within a franchise historically built around male stars — and its Netflix debut gives that bet a much larger audience than its theatrical run alone managed to reach.
